Iran Reaffirms Nuclear Enrichment Plans, Warns Against Sanctions Trigger

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that while Tehran welcomed the idea of launching a regional uranium enrichment center, it would not halt enrichment activities within its own territory. His comments came during a meeting with Iran’s parliamentary national security and foreign policy committee, as reported by the official Islamic Republic News Agency.
Araghchi also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to diplomacy in ongoing indirect talks with the United States over the nuclear file. “We have never left the negotiating table,” he said, but stressed that Iran “will not negotiate under pressure.”
Talks between Iran and the US, mediated by Oman, have taken place over several rounds since April—three in Muscat and two in Rome—with the aim of reaching an understanding on curbing Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting US sanctions.
The negotiations are rooted in the 2015 nuclear accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which Iran signed with six world powers. One clause of that agreement allows for the reimposition of international sanctions if Iran is found to be in violation—a move known as the “snapback” mechanism.
Araghchi issued a stern warning against triggering that mechanism, saying that any such step by France, Germany, or Britain—collectively referred to as the E3—would provoke a “harsh” response from Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iranian officials continue to reject US demands for a total halt to uranium enrichment, insisting that such activity remains a national right under international law.
