Messi snapped a 1-1 tie in the 40th minute when he found the net for the 15th time, scoring off a free kick. The reigning Golden Boot Award winner and league MVP scored for a 3-1 lead in the 52nd minute. His 17th and 18th goals of the season came in the 83rd and sixth minute of stoppage time with the final one also coming off a free kick. Messi began the day two behind Petar Musa of FC Dallas in the goals race.
Ryan Preece wins at Daytona to take the final playoff spot in NASCAR’s Cup Series
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Ryan Preece won the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway in overtime Saturday night to take the final playoff spot. Preece, who violently flipped twice in recent years at Daytona, moved to the front during a green-white-checkered finish. Bubba Wallace and Austin Cindric locked up the other two available spots. Wallace, Cindric, Shane van Gisbergen, Preece and Brad Keselowski started the night vying for the final three spots in the 10-race Chase for the championship. The playoffs begin next week at Darlington Raceway.

ATLANTA (AP) — Viktor Hovland made a pair of 8-foot birdies at the end of his round for a 65 and a one-shot lead over Ryan Gerard at the Tour Championship. One day remains in the PGA Tour season and it’s wide open in the chase for the $10 million prize. Scottie Scheffler and Chris Gotterup are three shots behind. They have combined for five PGA Tour titles this year. They’re joined by Adam Scott and Ludvig Aberg. And even Rory McIlroy has climbed back into the mix with a 63. Hovland made six big putts in a row to end his round.
Pete Crow-Armstrong continues NL MVP push with 3 more homers for Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong is adding to his case for the NL MVP award. Crow-Armstrong has homered three times against the Cincinnati Reds. The All-Star center fielder also singled and scored in the fourth. Crow-Armstrong is making a bid to unseat Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani as NL MVP after the Japanese slugger took home the honor each of the previous two years. Ohtani hasn’t been able to pitch since July 3 because of left knee soreness and a right biceps injury. While Ohtani has been limited to designated hitter with Los Angeles, Crow-Armstrong is one of baseball’s top defensive players.

Chourio hit his 20th homer of the season in a 5-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Saturday night. He’s the 17th player to put together three 20-homer seasons before turning 23 years old. He joins a star-studded fraternity that includes Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Eddie Mathews, Mickey Mantle, Frank Robinson and Orlando Cepeda among others. Carsynn Meyer’s RBI single sparks Nevada’s 12-2 rout of Ohio into LLWS title game
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Carsynn Meyer, the first girl to play in the U.S. championship, had an RBI single to help Nevada beat Ohio 12-2 on Saturday and advance to the Little League World Baseball Series title game. Meyer stepped to the batter’s box in the second inning to a roar of applause from the 20,000 fans. She delivered a single up the middle with the bases loaded to extend Nevada’s lead to three. Owen Guzman had three hits, scored twice and pitched solidly for 3 2/3 innings to lead Nevada. It’s the second-straight finals appearance for a Nevada team after a squad from Las Vegas won the U.S. championship a year ago. That team lost in the finals. This team, from Henderson, Nev., will face international champ Curaçao in Sunday’s finale.
