( ) Lawmakers in Massachusetts have passed legislation that will give doctors the final say on whether an abortion should be allowed late in pregnancy. Under current Massachusetts law, abortion is legal for the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. It is allowed after that only if a physician says it is necessary to preserve the life, physical or mental health of the mother. The new law would remove those requirements, giving the doctor carte blanche. Pro-life advocates point out that this would allow abortion right up until birth — even on healthy babies. They also say late term abortions are more complex and risky for women.
( ) WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sent a memo to teams that addresses ongoing discussions around transgenderism. The memo says the topic will be discussed further by a task force of team presidents and general managers. The league’s collective bargaining agreement states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” but it does not include any more specific language about how the term woman is to be defined. Earlier this month, two former NBA players, Enes Kanter and Royce White, declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, saying they identify as women.
