Egypt Parliament Authorizes Military Support for Saudi Arabia Against Houthis

By The Media Line Staff

Egypt’s parliament has authorized President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi to mobilize the country’s military to support Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces intensified missile and drone attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

The House of Representatives approved the proposal after el-Sisi requested parliamentary authorization last week for the military to assist Saudi Arabia. The vote was postponed before being completed Monday.

The House “approved authorizing President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to take the necessary measures to support the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” state newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

Houthi forces have launched numerous missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, targeting critical infrastructure, including energy facilities, airports and military installations, and causing human casualties.

The conflict has also increasingly affected the Bab el Mandeb Strait, the strategic waterway leading to Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Egyptian Parliament member Mostafa Bakry linked the decision to Egypt’s security and economic interests in the Red Sea.

“Egypt is protecting its security in the Red Sea and the Bab el Mandeb Strait. The Suez Canal will not remain hostage to a faction that is a tool of Iran. Any damage to Saudi soil harms Egypt,” Bakry said.

Egypt has repeatedly condemned attacks by Iran and Iranian-backed groups against Gulf countries but has not publicly entered direct combat against the Iranian regime.

Cairo has also declined to join the Mecca Defence Alliance, which includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey and operates on the principle that an attack against one member is an attack against all. The alliance was formed in August.
